Creative Holiday Gift Ideas for Tweens & Teens

I can vividly remember handing my oldest daughter a Christmas toy catalog when she was about four or five - the first time she could really grasp the concept of "Christmas is coming and I'm going to get presents!" - and asking her to show me some things she wanted Santa to bring her. She sat down at our coffee table and began pointing to at least two or three items per page saying, "I want this! What is it?" Indeed, the greed monster had taken hold and she wanted lots of stuff even though she didn't even know what most of that stuff was or what it did.

Now, that little girl is 15 and has two younger sisters, 10 and almost 13. As they have gotten older, holiday shopping has gotten increasingly difficult. My kids, in particular, are extremely non-materialistic, which is a fantastic thing 364 days of the year. However, it makes Christmas morning a bit challenging. I begin asking them in November, "What do you want for Christmas?" and their answer if almost always "I don't know," coupled with a heavy shoulder shrug. I can no longer push my cart down the toy aisle at Target and do 75% of my holiday shopping in one fell swoop!

(In fact, I used to do an annual "Hottest Toys of {Insert Year}" post, but haven't done that since 2014 because I'm no longer in tune with the kids' toy scene!)

So, I've been doing a little internet cruising to find some creative gift ideas for this year and, of course, decided to put them into a blog post to share with anyone else who is struggling for gift ideas, too!

1. PuraVida Bracelets - These bracelets are all the latest rage and, even better, a part of their proceeds go to various charities. You can pick something out based on your favorite color or based on your favorite cause! There are lots to choose from including animal preservation charities (like Save the Dolphins), awareness charities (like Autism Awareness and Domestic Violence Awareness), and health causes (like JDRF for diabetes and many different cancers).
PuraVida

2.  Himalayan Salt Lamp - Aside from being a cool addition to your teen's bedroom decor, these lamps are said to have positive effects on your health as well, including reduced allergy symptoms, increased energy, and improved sleep. Why not let them do homework by a light that gives off positive vibes?!

3. Sock Subscription Box - Does it seem like your dryer eats socks every time you do laundry? Is your tween or teen constantly asking to borrow socks from you because she's always running out of clean ones? Does he/she love a pair of funky, fun socks? Get them a sock box subscription! Yes, for real! With a subscription to one of these, your teen will receive one or two new paris of socks every month for three, six, or twelve months depending on your choices. Some of them even make donations to charity, too. Interested? Check out Say it With a Sock, Sock Panda, Foot Cardigan, or Society Socks.

4. A Snuggie - No, I'm not joking! Surely you remember these from a few years back. They were often given as gag gifts, but my kids walk around wrapped up in blanket all the time, so why not a blanket with sleeves?!?! Then, they can stay wrapped up while they do homework, eat, and text.
Snuggie
5. Game of Phones - Kids are always on their phones, right? So, give them something constructive to do! Well, kind of. The website describes this game as:
"a unique card game that brings smartphones to the party. Everyone grabs their smartphones. One player picks a card and gets to judge that round. The rest of the players have 60 seconds to respond with the funniest, most on point or downright weird thing they can find on their phones."
Game of Phones
6. Chocolate! - Everyone likes chocolate, right? But, what about chocolate with potato chip pieces, bacon, cinnamon cereal, or popping pop rocks? It's amazing and teens (or anyone) will love sampling these fun, high quality creations. Buy single bars or gift box collections!
Chuao Chocolate
7.  A Personalized Monogrammed Item- I happen to have two very talented sisters in-law who run their own Easy shop. One of their latest products are these fantastic monogrammed t-shirts. They also have caps, bags, and keychains just to name a few. If none of their items appeal to you, do some internet shopping for something your tween/teen would like!
Lola Darling Designs
8.  Bluetooth Shower Speaker - One of my girls likes to take her device into the bathroom, crank up the volume, and belt out some tunes while she showers. Do you have a teen who does that, too? Then, you need to add this to your shopping list! It can also be used outside, in their bedroom, anywhere they can carry it! This one (and other similar versions) are available through Amazon.
Bluetooth Speaker
 9. Fujifilm Instax mini - Most of today's tween and teens have never had the pleasure of shaking that instant Polaroid photo waiting for it to develop, but now they can! This little camera would be a fun, creative way for them to take pictures (without their phones) and actually have photographs to add to a book or their wall. Available directly from the manufacturer or multiple retailers and comes in a variety of colors.

10. Love with Food Subscription Box - People always joke about how much teen boys eat, but I've got all girls and I still can't keep the pantry stocked! These girls go through some food, so what better to give them as gift! Each month, they will get a box full of healthy snacks. Gluten free and organic options are available, too, and the company donates meals to hungry children with every box they send!
Love With Food
11. Zoku Slush and Shake Maker -According to the manufacturer, you freeze the core for 8 hours, then, add the liquid of your choice (juice, coffee, flavored) and stir. Voila! You have a slushie in minutes! This one is definitely a novelty, but it might be a fun way to encourage your teens to try something new!
Zoku Sluch and Shake Maker
12. Selfie Mic - This one actually can be found in the toy sale at Target! The manufacturer recommends it for ages 8+, but I can definitely see all my girls (teens included) having some fun with this one. With a selfie stick attached to a microphone and a free app with millions of karaoke tunes available, it has to be fun! (I even know a few adults who might like this one!)

A few slightly less creative, but equally useful and joy-giving ideas:
  • Clothes - sweaters, jeans, workout gear - whatever floats your teen's boat!
  • Other subscription boxes - I've listed couple here (PuraVida & Chuao also offer a subscription service), but a quick Google search will turn up tons of others. There's Birchbox & Ipsy for makeup, Enjoy Leggings for leggings (shocker!), Doodle Crate for art supplies, Scentbird for perfume/cologne, Lola for feminine supplies, Harry's for guy's shaving gear, and Book of the Month for the avid teen reader just to name a few. Seriously - that's really just a few of the options.
  • Gift cards - These sometimes seem impersonal, but, really, kids like these as much as anything and you can still get creative. How about gift cards to their favorite restaurant, movie theaters, or their favorite store so they can pick out their own stuff! Got a teen driver? Gift cards to the car wash will help them keep their vehicle in tip top shape!
  • Personal care kits - Around the holidays, you can readily find boxed sets of body wash, hair products, or makeup. If your kids are anything like mine, they go through a lot of this stuff, so why not wrap some up and put it under the tree?!
  • Winter gear - Does he/she need a new coat? Gloves? A fun toboggan? Snow boots? That would make a great Christmas gift!
  • Jewelry - Earrings, necklaces, watches, bracelets - oh my! How about a new monogram necklace or some pretty new earrings? Maybe a new watch or belt for the guys.
  • Experiences - Most of us already have more stuff than we need, so, when you're completely out of ideas for things to give them, step outside of the gift box a little bit and think about something they might like to DO instead. Tickets to a sporting event or concert would be appreciated, I'm sure. Even gifting them a mani/pedi, a yoga class, or a guitar lesson might be something they would enjoy immensely without adding more clutter to their already messy spaces. How about letting them take group of friends to one of the newest "breakout room" challenges or spending a day on the ski slopes?
Now, I can also assure you that my girls will not be getting everything on this list (but, they're probably reading this so I won't give any hints about what exactly they will be getting!) I am also very aware that this list has a decidedly female slant, but I have three daughters, so that's just how my brain works! Hopefully, even if you have guys in the house, you have found something here that you might not have thought of before.

Either way, just remember that, it's not really about the stuff we give -not the amount we spend or the number of boxes under the tree. It's about the love we put into choosing items or experiences in hopes that the gifts we give will bring joy to the ones we love. (Cheesy, but true!)

Got any creative ideas to add to the list? I'd love to hear them, so type them in a comment!

**Disclaimer - I have not purchased and/or used all of the items on this list. Therefore, inclusion in this list should not be considered a personal endorsement of any of these products. Please take time to do your own research including analyzing actual customer reviews before choosing to purchase any items listed here.

Thoughts I Have While Shopping with my Daughters

I have three daughters who are currently ages 10, 12, and 15. With back to school right around the corner (or already happening for my oldest), the task of back to school shopping has become unavoidable. But, gone are the days of strolling through seas of pink and ruffles; gone are the days when I alone decided what my children would wear; and, gone are the days when the clothes I purchased qualified as "adorable" or "precious." Nowadays, I'm just trying to find clothes that cover the essential body parts, that my daughters actually like, and that will not make me want to eject my own eyeballs as I watch my girls walk out the door each day.
I am well aware that there have been plenty of articles and blog posts about the discrepancies between boys' and girls' clothing and the lamentations of frustrated parents. (Like this one or this one or this one.) Well, I'm jumping on that bandwagon in order to get a few things off my chest about it. This blog post, however, will not be filled with research statistics or photographs comparing clothes. Instead, I am simply sharing a few of the things that run through my mind (and, occasionally spill out of my mouth) while I am walking through stores with my daughters. Ultimately, I just hope that, someday, designers and retailers will get a clue, understand how frustrating it is for parents and kids, and maybe start providing more appropriate clothing options.
  • You could just go swimming in your underwear. It would cover up more than that bathing suit does and probably be a lot less expensive.
  • Cute shirt. Where is the rest of it?
  • Cute shorts - if you were 4 years old.
  • Won't those give you a perpetual wedgie??
  • Why would you even make a size 00?? Just go back to the girl's department if you're that small.
  • Aw, I miss the little girls' department with all those cute little dresses and bloomers!
  • I know you wore a size 3 in those other shorts, but these are a different brand so you have to try them on. (Because, obviously, it would be way too much trouble for manufacturers to come up with some standardized sizing system so that you could wear the same size in all brands!!!!!😡)
  • OMG!! Why would they put THAT saying on a shirt for KIDS!?!?!
  • Does {Insert store/brand} not realize how much money they could make if they just made clothes that were not so ridiculous?? Seriously! They could make a freakin' fortune on shorts that were a couple inches longer.
  • What is that color called -"puke?"
  • I wonder if the the people who make these clothes actually have any daughters? Would they let their kids wear this crap!?!?!?
  • If one of your teachers calls me to school because these shorts are not "fingertip length," I swear I'm going to make them take you shopping!
  • If your grandmother was here she would tell you that they wore jeans with holes in them because they couldn't always afford to buy new ones when the old ones got torn and she would roll over in her grave if I paid good money for pre-ripped ones!! 😱
  • Good grief! When did I turn into my mother?!?! and grandmother?!?!
  • What kind of nut job thought it was a good idea to make shorts so short that the pockets hang out the bottom???
  • I know I'm old and totally not cool, but I was always taught that your clothes were supposed to COVER your underwear, not make it a feature.
  • You actually LIKE that?!? Are you kidding??
  • God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change . . . . .
  • And, of course . . . .

Feeling Scrooge-y!

Have you ever heard the expression "herding cats?" It's supposed to refer to an impossible task. I'm actually a dog person. I'm really not fond of felines at all, but I suspect actually attempting to herd cats would be quite frustrating. I'm very allergic to cats also, which would make the job that much more annoying.

If you've followed our Tuesday Ten posts for long, you know that there some crazy, random, made up holidays on the calendar and it just so happens that today, December 15, is Cat Herders Day. One website gives this explanation of the day:

A day for those of us who feel like we’re tasked with the impossible, Cat Herders Day recognizes the frustration of trying to manage the unmanageable. Whether it’s work, home, school or other areas of life, if it feels like herding cats, today’s your day.

I spent a good part of my day today trying to finish up my Christmas shopping and it felt very much like herding cats. By the time I had to go get in the carpool line at my kids' school, I was frustrated and, quite frankly, feeling pretty Scrooge-y. At the risk of sounding exceptionally "Bah Humbug"-ish, here are some of the things that frustrate me when I'm holiday shopping.
  1. Traffic - Roads and parking lots are packed and it seems, sometimes, the holidays make people lose all common sense and decency behind the wheel!
  2. Inconsiderate people - The people who won't move because they are oblivious to the other shoppers waiting to get to that same item; the people who cut you off for a parking space (see #1), the people who hit you with the door at the post office because they are in such a hurry and, then, they don't even apoloigize (Yes, that happened) - people forget their manners when they are Christmas shopping!
  3. Crowds - There are just people everywhere.
  4. Weather - Today, in NC, it was about 70 degrees and raining - not very Christmas-like weather.
  5. Items in the wrong place - I was looking for a book and the computer said the store had it and even showed me where it should be located on the store map. I looked three times. It wasn't there.
  6. Items out of stock - The other book I wanted to buy is only available online.
  7. Money - Christmas shopping certainly isn't inexpensive!
  8. There is always "one more thing." - When I think I'm finished, there always seems to be just one more thing I need to get. (I almost always forget about stockings until the last few days!)
  9. The nagging sense that I'm forgetting something. - See #8. For the entire month of December, I have that feeling that I am forgetting something very important.
  10. General commercialism - I was talking with a friend today about what gifts we are getting our children. We are both having the same dilemma - our children don't need anything and, really, they don't even want very much. We, however, are running all over town stressed out about finding all the right presents to put under the tree.We do it to ourselves, but it totally overshadows the real meaning of the holidays.
Despite the impression you probably have by now after reading my list, I really do love Christmas. In fact, it is my favorite holiday. I love the time with family and friends. I love the excitement and laughter. As I typed this, two of my girls were in the next room giggling as they decorated a gingerbread house. Despite the shopping headaches, I love seeing the eyes of someone I love light up when they open their gifts.

Sometimes, like today, I just get caught up in the shopping and "gotta get it" mentality. I forget what the season is really about. Deep down at the core, that is what really gets me frustrated and angry - my own failure to keep the "busy" from getting to me.

(I will also admit that, since I accidentally killed Santa Claus a few months ago, the shopping this year has definitely lost some of the fun and magic.)

For now, I'm going to shake off the "Bah Humbugs," spend some time with my family, and try to remember my Amazon password for all the shopping I still have left to do!!!

Have you finished your holiday shopping yet?? Better yet, have you started??

Things I Dread

Did you know that September is National Head Lice Prevention Month? If you're a parent, you know that there aren't many things parents dread more than getting a note from the school that there has been a case of head lice reported in their child's class.

Well, guess what? My kids have been in school for three weeks and I've already gotten that letter - twice! Both times, it was from my 5th grader's class. There were a few cases that were treated and children returned to school. Then, when they came back after Labor day, there was another case! Yuck!!

Now, having been teacher myself, I know that lice has nothing to do with cleanliness - anyone can get in - but, it still gives me the heebie jeebies and makes my head itch just thinking about it! It seems only fitting that today, in honor of Head Lice Prevention month, Tuesday Ten is all about things we dread!
  1. Packing Lunches - If you've read my blog long at all, you will not be surprised to see this at the top of my list!!!!
  2. Cleaning- I admit that, organizing and cleaning out can be cathartic at times. However, scrubbing toilets, washing dishes, and doing laundry are never enjoyable in my book!
  3. Going to the Gym - When I was younger, I played a lot of sports but I have never liked going to the gym just to work out. My mind races with all the other things I could be doing and, maybe I'm just doing it wrong, because I don't really see much result from going (i.e no weight loss, muscle building) Maybe I'm just doing it wrong because I don't really want to be doing it at all!
  4. via GIPHY
  5. The stomach bug!  - Last winter we were extremely lucky! I was the only family member who got the stomach bug and it was short-lived. I hope we don't have to pay for that this winter! I always hate when anyone in my family is sick, but the stomach bug is the WORST!
  6. Weather Extremes - I may be the only person in the world who claims winter as my favorite season. I love a good snow day and cozying up by the fire place, but even I get tired of super cold temperatures and crazy ice storms. After three pregnancies and "getting older" hormone shifts, I simply can't take the heat, either, though. Anything above 80 and I'm sweating like a pig and perfectly miserable.
  7. Homework - What I dread is not the actual homework, but the whining and complaining it causes!
  8. Mornings - I am not a morning person. Neither are my kids - especially the oldest and youngest. Yes, I know that each day is a new blessing and a new opportunity, but if each new day could start about 9:00am, that would be great!
  9. Going to the doctor/dentist - I am grateful for medical professionals who make sure my family is healthy and care for us when we're not. Nevertheless, I don't know anyone who enjoys having their teeth scraped by the dental hygienist or going in for their annual OB-GYN check up!
  10. Shopping for clothes - I used to enjoy this, but in the past year I have been unhappy with my weight and clothes shopping has become more frustrating than enjoyable.
  11. Christmas shopping - I also used to love this when my kids were younger. The only hard part was narrowing down the list of toys and finding time to go by myself. Now that they are older, their wish lists are much smaller yet MUCH more costly! (There are exactly 100 days left until Christmas, by the way!)
  12. There are only 100 days until Christmas! Do you dread shopping? #TuesdayTen @TheGolden Spoons @MamaRabia
  13. My kids driving - My oldest recently turned 13 and was quick to remind me that in just a year and a half, she will be taking driver's ed in anticipation of getting her learner's permit at 15. On one hand, it will be great when she can run to the store for me or drive herself to school (no more carpool lines!!!). On the other hand, I cannot imagine how scared and nervous I will be the first time she (or my other two) drives away on her own.
  14. My kids leaving home - I look forward to seeing what careers my girls will choose, what their spouses and kids will be like, and just finding out who they become. That said, I know there will come a day when they no longer live at home; when they are truly on their own and I can't protect them anymore. As much as I look forward to it, I also know my heart will break.
What do you dread?
